Detroit Red Wings Delivers Odd Request Alex Ovechkin For Breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL All-Time Goal Record

Red Wings GM and former captain Steve Yzerman had a special request for Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin for when he inevitably broke Wayne Gretzky's goals record.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is now the leading goal scorer in NHL history, having broken the record that was held by Wayne Gretzky since 1999 yesterday against the New York Islanders.
Ovechkin scored the 895th goal of his Hall of Fame career, taking sole possession of 1st place in NHL goals history.
It was in January of 2020 that Ovechkin passed former Red Wings captain and current GM Steve Yzerman for 9th all time in NHL goals scored with 693, an incredible 202 goals ago.
Yzerman released a special video message for Ovechkin at the time, and had a special request for when he inevitably broke Gretzky's goals record.
Hey, Alex. Steve Yzerman from Detroit here. I just wanted to congratulate you on moving into sole possession of ninth place on the league's all-time scoring list. You've had a tremendous career to date and it looks like you're going strong and you might play forever. Best of luck, and continued success. I really enjoyed watching you play and watching you fill in the net. All the best.
Yzerman then added:
Oh, and one more thing. If you ever do break Wayne Gretzky's all-time record for most goals in the league, after watching your Stanley Cup celebrations, I wanna be invited to your party.
Ovechkin broke the record which had been held by Gretzky; it was Gretzky himself who broke the goals record in 1993 which had previously been held by Red Wings icon Gordie Howe.
