Detroit Red Wings expected to steal unsigned Chicago Blackhawk

The Detroit Red Wings should be paying attention to UMD forward Dominic James, who may or may not be signed by the Blackhawks on August 15h, and if he isn't GM Steve Yzerman should sign the Plymouth, MI-born player.
Dominic James was drafted 173rd overall in the 6th round of the 2022 NHL Draft by GM Kyle Davidson and the Chicago Blackhawks.
To this day, he and the Blackhawks haven't inked an entry-level contract which by August 15th would render him an UFA.
The team has had two years after his draft date to sign him and has failed to do so yet. This could spell doom for the Blackhawks, while arguably having one of the best pipelines in the NHL could lose out on James, who is about to end his fourth year with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.
James will be finishing his best season with UMD Bulldogs, scoring a career-high 30 points (14 G, 16 A) in 35 games.
The
Red Wings Prospects account on "X" feels that James would be good to a prospect pipeline that has seen more and more talent trickling into the NHL.
He may not have a shot to make in the Blackhawks system, which is chock full of the league's top prospects rated by The Athletic.
Whereas, the
Red Wings is another original-six organization with a history of success in drafting and developing top talent.
Doneghey: "[Associate GM] Norm Maciver saw him a lot. He was able to see Dominic quite a bit. Feisty, competitive, north-south winger and has an inside game."
The team needs solid prospects and if Steve Yzerman is still utilizing the Tampa Bay model of drafting and developing your team into Stanley Cup contenders, James might be a great addition to the Red Wings bottom-six.
