TheDetroit Red Wings announced the signing of Canton, MI-born defenseman Nicklas Andrews today.
Andrews recently completed his fifth and final year of college hockey with the Michigan State Spartans.
The undrafted defenseman recently signed a deal with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye before inking a one-year two-way deal with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
His path to the NHL will require hard work and dedication as he'll have to work his way up the depth charts in order to receive a call-up from the Wings organization.
The undrafted free agent played 37 games this season with the MSU Spartans, and scored a total of 18 points (2 goals, 16 assists) with a +28 rating.
Out of all the defenseman on the team, he ranked 3rd in points, and tied 2nd in assists, he tanked 4th in goals, and 1st on the team in the +/- category.
Before he'd head home to play his final season of college hockey, Andrews would play four years of collegiate hockey with Colorado College, where he scored 49 points total in 129 career games, he accumulated 73 PIMs, and a -24 rating.
Andrews would begin his hockey journey in the USHL playing with the Des Moines Buccaneers in 2019-2020, and played for the Brookings Blizzard in the NAHL beforehand.
Andrews sounds like he has a lot to offer the Griffins if he can develop in a way that would fill a gap in the Red Wings' lineup on the blue line.
No details of AAV for his contract have been issued yet.
