Montreal Canadiens announce biggest signing of the NHL season hours before facing the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of squeezing their way into the second Eastern Conference Wild Card spot, following their incredible push as of late.

Despite their recent success, today the Red Wings will fight for one of the most crucial games of their NHL regular season, as they are just six points shy of taking the second Wild Card spot from the Canadiens, with only six games remaining before postseason.

This game is needless to say do or die for Detroit, and it was just announced on NHL.com that the Montreal Canadiens are doing everything in their power to hold onto their postseason spot, as they have just unexpectedly signed their fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Ivan Demidov has drawn significant comparisons to the Philadelphia Flyers' rookie, Matvei Michkov, with similar blend of speed and an extensive amount of talent offensively.

Within Demidov's first full season in the KHL, the forward concluded with an outstanding 19 goals, and tallied at 49 points in just 65 games.

This is definitely a little worrisome for the Detroit Red Wings at this crucial part of the season.

Although there is no certainty the forward will make his debut before the Red Wings take on the Canadiens tonight, we can be sure to expect Demidov to take to the ice prior to the end of the NHL regular season.
