The Detroit Red Wings' Moritz Seider had a goal called off after Wes McCauley called it a "distinct kicking motion"; the uproar from fans has forced the NHL to clarify their ruling.

After referee Wes McCauley called off a game-tying goal of Moritz Seider's on Friday night, he'd be under fire soon after.
The veteran referee's controversial call said Seider used a kicking motion to score the goal, which has us all puzzled if you re-examine the video multiple times.
You can clearly see that Seider's rebound and shot had been completed with his stick, but regardless, here's the NHL explanation behind the decision.
"Video review determined that Detroit's Moritz Seider kicked the puck into the Anaheim net. According to Rule 49.2, «A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net with his skate/foot.»

The NHL's Explanation on the Reversal of Moritz Seider's Goal

As you can see above, there is no kicking motion that Seider utilized to score off the rebound from Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal.
Scouting the Refs had a better explanation of the legality of the goal:
Seider clearly deflects the puck with his skate, which is legal - even if intentional. Here's Rule 37.4:

A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking Player's skate who does not use a «distinct kicking motion» shall be ruled a GOAL.

A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking Players' skate shall also be ruled a GOAL, as long as no «distinct kicking motion» is evident.

It's another decision of NHL referees, in a multitude of decisions that have negatively influenced the direction of a game.
A game that would see John Gibson return to Anaheim for a special tribute.
There legitimately needs to be an investigation into what kind of thought processes were behind this decision, and more than just the rule book.
Is there another motivating factor?
Maybe gambling? All we'll have now is speculation, but the league is back up to its old tricks.
