Signing announcement: A familiar face to the Detroit Red Wings earns substantial new salary
Former Red Wings Goaltender Magnus Hellberg has found a new home in the SHL with Djurgarden.
Magnus Hellberg worked his way up the ranks into multiple stints in the NHL. None of his runs would amount to a full-time job in the league, however.
He'd show his worth with the Red Wings, playing a total of 18 games, and wouldn't be able to land a full-time job in a chaotic net during the 2022-2023 season as he'd hoped.
He'd leave the club for the AHL with a 4-8-1 record, with a 3.29 GAA, and a .885 save percentage.
Hellberg would fare much better with the Grand Rapids Griffins playing 4 games, 2-2-0, and a .932 save percentage.
He'd give the NHL one more go, playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and would find himself once again making a journey through the AHL playing for the WBS Penguins, the Charlotte Checkers, and the Texas Stars. Now he's decided to relocate to Sweden and has joined the SHL's Djurgarden.
He'll be earning close to what he was paid with his last AHL squad, the Texas Stars (450K AAV), which was 421K AAV.
The deal pays him $421K AAV for the next three years, keeping him at home, in Sweden. Which is awfully convenient, considering his professional hockey league journey in America was full of ups and downs as a journeyman.
Hellberg hasn't suited up in the SHL since the 2011-2012 season, back when it went by a different name, the "Elitserien".
Originally a second-round pick by the Nashville Predators in 2011, he never found himself more than an AHL goalie, who was once thought to be a potential backup to Pekka Rinne.
