The state of Michigan has long been a hockey hotbed in the USA, and the Detroit Red Wings are now reaping the benefits.
Bob Duff highlighted that thirty-eight Michigan-born players have made it to the NHL, with six currently on the Red Wings' roster: Dylan Larkin, Jeff Petry, Tyler Motte, Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp, and Jack Campbell. Although Campbell might spend the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, these six players still represent 15.4% of the Michigan-born NHL players.
Interestingly, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman noted that the concentration of Michigan natives on the Red Wings' roster was not part of a deliberate strategy but rather a coincidence. This local talent pool could offer the Red Wings a unique edge, blending the familiarity of homegrown players with the experience and skill needed to compete at the highest level.
