The Detroit Red Wings have announced the signing of a 'huge' 6-foot-5 defenseman on Thursday.
Steve Yzerman has kicked off his summer with the signing of a big-bodied, young defenseman.
Right-handed shot defenseman are not easy to come by, which was displayed moments ago in a completed trade between Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth for JJ Peterka.
It seems as though Yzerman didn't want one of his free agents to head to another organization, as the team announced the signing of 24-year old Antti Tuomisto.
He is not just any ordinary defenseman, he is a bulldozing 205-pound frame standing at 6-foot-5.
Spending his past two seasons developing in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, he is expected to make a strong case in development camp to earn a spot on the NHL roster.
"The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Antti Tuomisto to a one-year, two-way contract extension.
Tuomisto, 24, spent the entire 2024-25 season with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins, leading the team's defensemen in assists (24), points (27), penalty minutes (54) and shots (109) in 67 regular-season games. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound blueliner also skated in two Calder Cup Playoff games with the Griffins.
