Red Wings prospect goalie Trey Augustine has decided to return to the Michigan State Spartans rather than spend this year playing for the Red Wings organization.
The Red Wings have envisioned Trey Augustine, who they took in the 2nd round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft from nearby East Lansing, could potentially be their goaltender of the future.
Along with fellow goalie prospect
Sebastian Cossa, the Red Wings have a pair of arguably the top net minders within their system in the game today. But fans are going to have to wait to see him wear the red and white, as he's decided to keep wearing the green and white by
continuing his college career with Michigan State.
It wasn't a decision he took lightly, though. Augustine said he still has his eyes set on leading the Spartans to a national championship after falling just short this year.
It was a good year. I mean, obviously it ended on a negative note, and there's still something to prove there.
It was difficult. I didn't feel there was a wrong answer. Just kind of what worked best for me and my career. And I still need to get stronger on and off the ice. And I think staying in college gives me a little bit of a better opportunity to kind of develop my body and get ready for the professional game.
This year with the Spartans, Augustine went 19-7-4 with a 2.08 GAA and a .924 SV%.
Additionally, Augustine was honored by being named one of the finalists for the Mike Richter Award, which annually goes to top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey.
While it will take a bit longer, the future of Red Wings goaltending is bright with both Augustine and Cossa in the system.
