Edmonton Oilers star captain Connor McDavid recently returned to the ice after serving a 3-game suspension; he cross checked Vancouver Canucks forward in the face out of frustration after being held for several seconds.
The incident took place near the end of the game earlier in the month; it also resulted in the suspension of defenseman Tyler Myers, who delivered a cross check to the face of his own upon Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard.
Former NHL coach and Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry has weighed in on the situation, labeling the treatment McDavid underwent as "ridiculous".
Speaking on his recent "Grapevine" podcast, Cherry stated that not only was McDavid's suspension the wrong call, but that Myers deserved his suspension if McDavid was going to be removed for 3 games himself.
«Well, you had to give him three games if the other guy (Myers) gets three games.»
The Oilers released a public statement in which they not only blasted the suspension of McDavid, but also promised to help him through the process - as if he had just undergone a personal tragedy or ordeal.
They didn't endear themselves to many fans with their statement, especially after McDavid's surprising outburst. However, there are also fans like Cherry who believe that McDavid's opponents have gotten away with too much abuse on him and that it was a matter of time before he took matters into his own hands.
