The New York Islanders re-signed restricted free agent Oliver Wahlstrom to a one-year, $1 million deal just yesterday. However, the former first-round pick's future with the team remains uncertain. According to Ethan Sears in the New York Post, Wahlstrom's new contract does not guarantee he will be in the Islanders' lineup this season.
Wahlstrom was a healthy scratch for every game after February 24th, only appearing in the final, meaningless game of the season. Coach Patrick Roy, who took over in late January, omitted Wahlstrom from his plans. Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello acknowledged Wahlstrom's hard work over the summer and suggested that the team might seek opportunities for him elsewhere.
