1,000-game NHL veteran James Van Riemsdyk has joined the Detroit Red Wings during practice, as the Original Six team and Todd McLellan have anticipated his arrival after an ongoing family issue.

The Detroit Red Wings are expecting 1,000-game NHL veteran James Van Riemsdyk to enter the fold, as the veteran was out for an extended period of time due to a family matter.
He missed the first two weeks of training camp and the first six preseason games due to a "good reason", according to the team.
According to Todd McLellan, he should be ready to suit up for practice by October 1st:
"JVR, from what I've been told, I think he will arrive tomorrow," coach Todd McLellan said on Tuesday, Sept. 30. "And if he does get here tomorrow, if everything goes OK - he's got some things that he needs to do, obviously, before he gets on the ice, physical or medical and all that type of stuff.

"We practice a little bit later. And if we can get it all set up, I hope that he's on the ice tomorrow. Now we've got to get him up to speed."

The Detroit Red Wings Intend James Van Riemsdyk to Be A Top-Six Player

This will give James Van Riemsdyk time to adjust to the Red Wings' lineup, practicing with the team for the first time. He'll have a week to be ready for the team's next matchup on October 9th against the Montreal Canadiens for the season opener.
His absence from the team has allowed the Red Wings to get a better idea of where prospects are in their development, including Emmitt Finnie, along with Elmer Soderblom.
Both prospects have gotten looks on the 1st-line.
JVR signed a one-year $1.0 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings this offseason, and could be a great role player for a rebuilding team whose goal is "progress".
