The Detroit Red Wings locker room has experienced another day where they missed offseason signing James Van Riemsdyk at training camp; Steve Yzerman signed him to a one-year deal on July 1st, 2025.

The news out of Detroit is troubling, as veteran NHL star James Van Riemsdyk hasn't shown up for training camp.
The 1,000-game NHL forward signed a one-year, $1M average annual value contract on July 1st, 2025.
But for now, remains out of the lineup due to a personal matter, which has kept him away from training camp for an extended period of time.
«No update at this point,» Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said on the team website. «I'm excited about just seeing him, period.

«But again, he's got more important things to do care of right now than what we're doing here, and he has our full support. It's going a little bit longer than we thought, but that's okay.»

1000-Game NHL Veteran James Van Riemsdyk Out of the Lineup

James Van Riemsdyk was signed as a solution for the Red Wings' lack of offensive depth. As someone who can slot in up and down the lineup, he's a great choice for a bargain price.
Last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, he scored 36 points (16-20) in 71 games.
He averaged 11:32 time on ice last season under Dean Evason and could be a great middle-six option here in Detroit.
Though the goal for Vans Riemsdyk here in Detroit is to play catch-up once he arrives with Todd McLellan, and may find himself in a top-six spot, on the left side for the team.
«We've got some catch-up work to do with him once he gets here,» McLellan said. «But we'll work hard with him, and I know he'll work hard with us and we'll get him up to speed.

The veteran forward has good hands and gets to the dirty areas on the ice, which Coach McLellan likes most about him.
The Red Wings eagerly await his arrival in Detroit.
