Completed trade between the Detroit Red Wings and a Western Conference team: Yzerman may have overpaid

John Gibson has been a goalie who has played behind terrible teams his entire career. Aside from the 2017-18 season, he was never a part of the Ducks' past glory in 2007, when they won the Stanley Cup.
For Gibson, Yzerman would bank part of the Red Wings' future in acquiring him from the Ducks, along with Petr Mrazek, he sent a 2nd & 4th-round pick in 2026 & 2027.
Quite a return for Gibson, who is 32 years old, and in 2023-24 ended the year with a .888 save percentage. Quite a dismal year.
While he'd rebound in 2024-25 with a .912 save percentage, one has to wonder whether he's truly a starter in the crease or a stopgap for
Sebastian Cossa.
Is John Gibson Blocking Sebastian Cossa?
While John Gibson is set to lead the
Detroit Red Wings into the 2025-26 season as the starter, it remains to be seen whether or not he's a long-term solution.
His inconsistency is an issue for the team, and he could be blocking someone like Sebastian Cossa from a shot in the NHL, all while keeping the crease "status quo," meaning, veteran held.
This all the while Sebastian Cossa has proven himself to be more than capable of being a call-up or getting promoted into the full-time lineup.
Last season in the AHL, he played a total of 41 games, with a record of 21-15-5, 2.45 GAA, and a.911 save percentage.
Sebastian Cossa is the goalie of the future, while Gibson remains the goalie for now.
Yzerman's particular choice to send two draft picks hurts the team, as they could've drafted players to add to the prospect pool, or traded for a reclamation project, or a top-six winger.
