One hockey analyst has teased that the National Hockey League is considering a major sweater change in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement.
It's been over 20 years now since the
National Hockey League made an aesthetic change to their on-ice product.
At the start of 2003-04, teams began wearing their dark sweaters on home ice while switching to their white-based sweaters on the road. For many fans, it was a startling difference to how things had been for the last several decades.
But could the NHL be making a switch back for home teams wearing their white-based sweaters on home ice?
Analyst Ryan Kennedy has indicated that the NHL could be considering making the move as a mandate in their next Collective Bargaining Agreement; the current CBA expires at the end of 2025-26.
Exciting sartorial gossip: I'm told the NHL might switch back to white jerseys at home, dark jerseys on the road in the next CBA. But could we ever see dark on dark sometimes, I wonder? Red Detroit vs. Blue Toronto, for example.
Reportedly, the NHL decided to switch to dark sweaters on home ice in order to boost sales.
From the early 1940s through the late 1960s before expansion beyond the Original 6, teams wore white at home and dark on the road.
Beginning in 1970, the change was made to wearing dark sweaters on home ice, and white on the road. But in 1975, the change was made right back.
That system held until the fall of 2003 when teams went back to wearing their dark sweaters at home and white on the road.
