Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman emphasize that they need defensive improvement before NHL training camp.
The Detroit Red Wings have been on an upward trajectory in recent years but have yet to end their playoff drought. As training camp kicks off in Traverse City, General Manager Steve Yzerman strongly emphasizes improving the team's defense. The Red Wings ranked 24th in goals against last season and narrowly missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker with Washington. Yzerman believes that to take the next step, the team must become a more formidable defensive unit.
"I want to see progress in our team as a whole," Yzerman said.
He highlighted the importance of reducing goals to ensure long-term success. In his third season, Coach Derek Lalonde faces the challenge of turning the Red Wings into a solid defensive team.
The roster appears mostly set, pending the signing of defenseman Moritz Seider. Training camp will focus on ice time battles, special teams roles, and the goaltending pecking order. Ville Husso returns after missing much of last season with injuries and will compete with Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon for the starting goalie spot.
Offensively, the Red Wings face challenges after losing key players like David Perron, Robby Fabbri, and Daniel Sprong, who combined for 75 goals. The team will rely on new additions Vladimir Tarasenko and Jonatan Berggren to help fill this gap. Yzerman also anticipates contributions from young players and a full season from Patrick Kane.
Training camp begins Thursday, with the preseason opener on September 25 in Chicago. The Red Wings aim to solidify their defensive play and push for a playoff spot.
