The longtime NHL veteran Max Pacioretty has officially declined to join the Detroit Red Wings to accept another job away from the League.
During the offseason, most analysts put Max Pacioretty on the list of players expected to sign a professional tryout and return to the NHL for another season.
After all, he had just come off an impressive playoff run with the Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring eight points in 11 games.
But now, in a new development, it appears he has decided to leave the NHL.
Max Pacioretty Reportedly Leaves NHL For Coaching Job
According to Nick Alberga, a reporter covering the Maple Leafs, Pacioretty is now working with the University of Michigan despite getting interest from several NHL teams during the summer.
Here's what he posted on X:
Pacioretty is retiring after 17 seasons in the NHL. He was drafted 22nd overall in 2007 by the Montreal Canadiens, where he became captain before getting traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018. He eventually went on to play for the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, and Toronto Maple Leafs to end his career.
In 939 regular season games, he tallied 335 goals and 346 assists, with a +53 plus/minus. He also took part in 89 playoff games, in which he scored 28 goals and 30 assists.
Injuries forced him to miss several months over the past years, including two torn Achilles in two years.
"This year was very difficult for me, being away from my family, so I'm really excited just to get home and be with them, and talk to them about what's next in life. But in terms of playing, that's difficult to answer right now."
We wish him the best in the next chapter of his life.
