Simon Edvinsson's 2023-24 season is filled with optimism and determination after narrowly missing the playoffs by one point with the Detroit Red Wings last year.
That experience was a major motivator for the young defenseman, fueling his offseason training. He worked closely with teammates like Lucas Raymond and focused on improving his strength and conditioning, even adding bulk by consuming a lot of avocados.
At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Edvinsson brings a strong presence to the Red Wings' defense. He earned praise from coach Derek Lalonde for his impact during his limited NHL appearances last season. Lalonde noted that while Edvinsson has room to refine his consistency, his development in the AHL with Grand Rapids was critical in making him more prepared for full-time NHL duty. Lalonde is excited to see Edvinsson potentially form a defensive pairing with veterans like Jeff Petry, or even team up with fellow former top pick Moritz Seider.
«He was a really, really good player for us down the stretch,» Lalonde said. «He improved our team. He improved our D corps. I know he can battle being lackadaisical in his play at times, missing on some plays because of that approach. It's probably more like a lot of young guys. Grand Rapids guys did an excellent job with them. I think we're going to get a little bit more ready player because of the patience we've had with him spending time in (the AHL) last year. So very excited for him.»
Edvinsson's teammates have also been impressed. Alex DeBrincat complimented his skating and defensive abilities, particularly his active stick and physicality. Captain Dylan Larkin also highlighted Edvinsson as someone the team will depend on for significant minutes this season.
With his first AHL playoff experience, Edvinsson feels more prepared to contribute to the Red Wings' playoff push. His focus this season will be to play a simpler game, avoid trying to be a hero, and capitalize on offensive opportunities when they arise. His bond with Petry, both on and off the ice, further boosts his confidence as he heads into his first full NHL campaign.
