The Detroit Red Wings were reportedly in on Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos during the summer, according to Woodward Sports host and longtime sports journalist Terry Foster.
As Foster put it, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman was in negotiations with Stamkos, whom he had a special connection with dating back to his days as Tampa Bay's executive.
But Yzerman was allegedly unable to secure the deal after not hearing back from team CEO Chris Ilitch about matching the sudden offer from the Nashville Predators which gave Stamkos a fourth year; Detroit was reportedly only offering three at first.
According to McCarty, the Red Wings were also in on New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba, who has numerous local ties.
Trouba is originally from the Detroit suburb of Rochester, and grew up playing locally before attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also played for the United States National Development Team Program in Ann Arbor.
He's played for both the Winnipeg Jets and the Rangers, and was reportedly on the trading block during the summer.
Trouba was rumored to have rejected a potential trade to the Red Wings due to personal reasons, which many thought was not wanting to uproot his spouse, a physician with a residency at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Last season, he was the recipient of the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
He is once again rumored to be on the trading block by Rangers general manager Chris Drury, who is also reportedly interested in moving on from forward Chris Kreider.
Don't be shocked to see Yzerman take another swing at acquiring Trouba at some point this season if he's available.
