Defenseman Albert Johansson reveals his plans for stepping in for injured Red WIngs' Simon Edvinsson
The Detroit Red Wings are going to be relying on young Albert Johansson to step up in the absence of the injured Simon Edvinsson, who is expected to miss the next handful of games.
While the Detroit Red Wings won't have defenseman Simon Edvinsson for the immediate future, they're going to be relying on fellow rookie Albert Johansson to help offset some of the void he leaves behind.
Edvinsson was hurt during Wednesday night's 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Little Caesars Arena; he left in the 1st period after just a few minutes of play and wasn't able to come back.
According to head coach Derek Lalonde, Edvinsson likely won't be able to play at least the next three games, leaving it up to Johansson to step up his game.
Johansson says he intends to stay positive and just play his game while continuing to put in the work off the ice.
You want to play every game and be out there. I just try to stay positive. First year, I kind of knew before (the season began) I was going to be a little bit in and out (of the lineup), and it's a learning experience.
When I'm not playing, I'm just trying to work extra on the ice and in the gym and stay positive and be ready when I'm in the lineup.
Meanwhile, coach Derek Lalonde complimented how Johansson's first several games in the NHL have gone.
I've liked Albert his last couple games out. He had a stretch of games there where some things were finding him. That was a tough West Coast trip for him, but his bounce back from that was good. I'm fully confident he'll have some more consistency in the game.
The things we saw in camp, the things we saw from last year (in Grand Rapids), his ability to move a puck, just confidence and some assertiveness in his game and some consistency with it.
Johansson, who is actually two years Edvinsson's senior, has a lone assist in 15 games while averaging 13:09 of ice time.
