Maple Leafs place 34-year-old center on the trade block and the Red Wings have an opportunity
The Toronto Maple Leafs placed a 34-year-old center on the trade block, a great opportunity for Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings.
Steve Yzerman and Brad Treliving, general managers of the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, had completely different offseasons this year.
In Detroit, the plan has been the same for years, and Yzerman isn't one to stray from it. He put a lot of trust in his prospect pool but added goaltender
John Gibson and veteran James van Riemsdyk.
To fill the void left by Marner, Treliving acquired several depth players-perhaps too many.
Latest reports suggest the Leafs could be looking to part ways with one of their depth players soon.
Wings Could Replace JT Compher With Toronto Maple Leafs Forward
If they do manage to trade him and dump his salary, the Wings are likely to give his lineup spot to a young prospect or target a bigger-picture player. But if the Leafs look to offload
Calle Jarnkrok, it could be an enticing short-term option for Yzerman.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period shared an update, saying that the Leafs tried to trade Jarnkrok all summer long and it hasn't happened:
Replacing Compher with Jarnkrok wouldn't make a big difference for the Wings, but the Leafs player will become an unrestricted free agent.
And if it hasn't happened yet, nothing indicates it could happen before the start of the season. The Leafs could be happy to count on him at some point during the season if injuries strike the lineup. If not, shipping him to a rebuilding team near the trade deadline could be another option.
