For the first time since the mid-1980's, the Detroit Red Wings made an in-season coaching change.
Departing the franchise are now-former head coach Derek Lalonde and assistant Bob Boughner, while arriving in their place were Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney.
As you may remember, McLellan served as an assistant coach for the Red Wings under Mike Babcock and helped them to the 2008 Stanley Cup before taking the head coaching position with the San Jose Sharks.
He's also coached the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings; the latter two destinations, he also had goaltender Cam Talbot , who is in his 1st year with the Red Wings.
For today's late afternoon matchup against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, the Red Wings are going with the following line combinations, per Ansar Khan of MLive:
Veleno - Larkin - Raymond
DeBrincat - Copp - Kane
Berggren - Compher - Tarasenko
Rasmussen - Kasper - Motte
Chiarot - Seider
Edvinsson - Petry
Gustafsson - Holl
Alex Lyon will start in net.
While McLellan and new assistant coach Trent Yawney didn't have much time to prepare for Friday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, they ran their 1st full official practice yesterday and worked on a number of things that the Red Wings desperately need to improve.
And McLellan made it clear what he wants the Red Wings, who are tied for last place in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference, to do differently.
