NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a disappointing update for Detroit Red Wings fans, as Connor McDavid has yet to sign a deal with Stan Bowman and the Oilers, but his future in Edmonton may have just been confirmed.

Connor McDavid is about to head into the 2025-26 NHL season without a new contract signed. For Edmonton Oilers fans, this should be cause for concern, as your #1 star has yet to commit to the team.
News like this would give you an idea that a team like the Detroit Red Wings, with all of their cap space ($11.9 M), and swoop in and sign him when free agency rolls around.
Yet, the latest updates aren't promising for the Red Wings, and Oilers either as McDavid is concerned with winning more than anything.
"All options are on the table and that would mean length of term, short term, long term, no term. All options are on the table as I've alluded to, so that would include a short-term deal."

Connor McDavid's Future In The NHL "More Fanatical About Winning"

Those were the words of the 32 Thoughts Podcast'sElliotte Friedman.
Recent reports have linked McDavid and the Red Wings as suitors.
But this latest update by Elliotte Friedman has revealed that he wants to win a Stanley Cup in Edmonton.
"I've been told now by several people in the aftermath of that defeat, the second one, [McDavid] has become even more fanatical about winning, like all he cared about was winning before, now he's in another stratosphere about it.

The only prescription is a Stanley Cup, and I think he sees it as he's got to go to another level, and the team has to be able to continue at another level."

There was hope that he might consider a trip to Hockeytown and improve the team with his presence. It seems unlikely that he'd ever consider a team that isn't in win-now mode.
That narrows his selection of his next landing spot in the NHL, especially if it isn't the Oilers. Rather than being tied down long-term, he may want a shorter deal so he doesn't get caught up in the mix of another team that can't finish the job.
