Elliotte Friedman reveals a blockbuster trade between the Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings that failed
The NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed a failed trade between the Dallas Stars and the Detroit Red Wings involving a top six forward.
Unfortunately for Steve Yzerman and his team, the deal fell apart before it could cross the finish line.
On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman specifically mentioned that the Red Wings had serious interest in Dallas forward
Mason Marchment before he ended up being traded to the Seattle Kraken.
Marchment, 30, brings exactly what Detroit has been missing in its middle six: grit and skills. Last season, he scored 47 points, including 22 goals, in 62 games.
It seems Yzerman tried to pry him out of Dallas to bolster a group that still needs more punch up front. But like many things this offseason for the Wings, it just didn't come together.
This failed deal just adds to a frustrating summer in Detroit. As Friedman also pointed out, Yzerman struggled on the free agent market. Many of the players the Red Wings were interested in such as
Viktor Arvidsson and
Nikolaj Ehlers, signed elsewhere without even granting Detroit a meeting.
It all circles back to a pattern that might be hurting the Wings. Yzerman is known for being incredibly cautious with term, refusing to hand out long contracts to veterans.
While it's smart to a point, it can also scare off players looking for security.
Hopefully for Red Wings fans, this failed trade isn't the final chapter of Yzerman's offseason. He's still under pressure to get this team back into the playoffs, and sooner rather than later.
