Detroit Red Wings fans are never shy about voicing their opinions on the team's unrestricted free agent (UFA) signings, and often, the feedback is far from positive.
Contracts given to players like
Ben Chiarot,
Andrew Copp, and
J.T. Compher have been widely criticized, particularly for their term lengths. The deal for
Justin Holl has faced even harsher scrutiny, with some fans labelling it one of the worst in team history.
Reflecting on past mistakes, Detroit Hockey Now has identified five of the worst UFA contracts in the Detroit Red Wing's history. Among them is the ill-fated signing of Stephen Weiss, who was plagued by injuries after joining the team on a five-year, $24.5 million contract. Another misstep was the acquisition of Derian Hatcher, whose significant knee injury led to an early buyout of his $30 million deal.
Curtis Joseph's three-year, $24 million contract also ranks among the most regrettable, as his lukewarm commitment to the team led to a tense goalie situation.
Uwe Krupp's $16.4 million deal, marred by injuries and off-ice controversies, is another low point. Lastly, Warren Young's disappointing tenure after a four-year contract further underscores the team's struggles with UFA signings.
