Detroit Red Wings forward finds new home with the Dallas Stars

Former Detroit Red Wings prospect Cross Hanas has made a surprising appearance on the West Coast. The former 2020 NHL Draft pick has bet on himself as he's joining the Dallas Stars training camp roster on a professional try-out.

Hanas, originally a 55th overall pick in the 2nd round of the NHL Draft, will attempt to earn a spot on the Stars roster.

Cross Hanas played the majority of the 2024-25 season in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He'd score 9-8-17 in 58 games with Detroit's affiliate team, but didn't show enough promise for the team to re-sign him.

He played three seasons in the AHL with the Griffins and has never had a season above 17 points. While consistency is nice, the team would've liked to see more production from him.

With the Red Wings failing to send him a qualifying offer, it'd make him a free agent and give him the ability to choose his path in his professional hockey career.

He could infuse the Stars with new talent and revitalize his career in Dallas. But a change of scenery could be what triggers him to reach a new level of heights in the NHL.

Could the Stars tap into the unforeseen potential that the Red Wings couldn't realize?

Fortunately, for Hanas, born in Dallas, Texas, this could be a nice short-term stay in his home state should he fail to make the Stars lineup.
