A former member of the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues has sadly passed away at the age of 76, announced by the Blues on Wednesday.
A saddening announcement confirmed the passing of a longtime Original Six player.
Phil Roberto has passed away far too soon at the age of 76.
The Original Six forward started his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens in December of 1969 and had a slow start but would greatly improve the following season with 14 goals and 21 points in 39 games.
He suited up for 15 playoff games and earned himself a Stanley Cup against the Chicago Blackhawks with the Montreal Canadiens.
Partway through the 1971-72 season, Roberto was traded to the St. Louis Blues.
There, he had his best years, scoring 33 goals and 71 points in 148 games over four seasons.
The NHL Alumni Association is deeply saddened to learn Phil Roberto has passed away at the age of 76.
Representing his hometown Niagara Falls Flyers of the then Ontario Hockey Association, Phil and the Flyers captured the 1968 Memorial Cup, with Phil earning 12 points in 10 games.
The Niagara Falls, Ontario native later played for the Detroit Red Wings starting in the 1974-75 season, scoring 14 goals and 48 points in 83 games.
In 1975-76, he left Detroit and played for three other NHL teams: the Kansas City Scouts, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Barons.
In 1977-78, he joined the WHA's Birmingham Bulls, ending his NHL career with 75 goals and 106 assists in 385 regular-season games.
We at RedWingsInsider send our condolences to Roberto's family, friends, former teammates, and colleagues.
