Steve Yzerman has opened up a roster spot for a Detroit Red Wings prospect to step in, as he's waived controversial defenseman Justin Holl, a former liability of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Justin Holl's NHL career hasn't been a great one. Typically, a bottom-pairing defenseman in the latter stages of his career, he's found a spot no different here in Detroit.
His lack of meaningful play in the Red Wings system has given fans plenty of ammo to criticize his expensive $10.2 million contract. And now, with the preseason at an end, Yzerman is burying his contract in the AHL by placing him onwaivers today.
Holl will join a full complement of former NHL players and prospects on waivers today, as he'll head back to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Justin Holl: A Grand Rapid Griffin from here on out?

Holl has played 111 total games for the Red Wings, and during that time frame, scored 13 points (2-11). He has never found himself in the position of becoming a top-pairing defenseman here. While his play is more indicative of a depth contributor, adding 117 blocked shots and 94 hits.
The depth defenseman will have to work his way back up the depth chart if he's to find himself in the NHL again, or force a trade by the deadline.
His acquisition might be one of the more disappointing moves by General Manager Steve Yzerman in recent years.
