Detroit Red Wings' 2024 first-round pick, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, had a memorable experience playing alongside Norwegian NHL star Mats Zuccarello at the IIHF World Championship.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, who looked up to Matts Zuccarello as a role model, was thrilled by the opportunity but also had a surprising run-in with his idol.
While staying in a Czech hotel, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and fellow rookie Stian Solberg returned from sightseeing to find their room filled with the overpowering smell of blue cheese.
Unbeknownst to them, Matts Zuccarello and fellow Norwegian legend Patrick Thoresen had played a prank by placing stinky cheese around their room. The two veterans didn't reveal their prank until the team was at the airport on their way home.
Despite the prank, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard holds no ill will and sees it as a rite of passage.
«It meant a lot to be able to play with them,» he said. «I really liked just being able to talk to him, and play with him of course.»
He also appreciated the advice from Zuccarello, who encouraged him to keep his shots low.
