An NHL analyst set the record straight about the trade rumors surrounding Detroit Red Wings goaltender John Gibson.
A lot of fans have been disappointed about John Gibson's performances since he was traded to the Red Wings by the Anaheim Ducks.
In 12 games played this season, the 32-year-old goaltender has only four wins, a 3.46 GAA, and a .870 SV%.
In recent weeks, there have been plenty of trade rumors surrounding him due to his struggles and Sebastian Cossa's great start with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
Now, a renowned NHL analyst set the record straight on the situation.
NHL Analyst Shares Official Update On John Gibson Trade Rumours
One of the questions he answered was about the Detroit Red Wings' goalie situation and the trade rumors about John Gibson.
According to him, trading Gibson isn't the solution for now.
Even if Sebastian Cossa has a great start in the AHL with a 5-1-0 record, a 1.67 GAA, and a .940 SV%, parting ways with Gibson this early in the season wouldn't make sense.
Goaltenders need time to adjust when they join a new team, and after all, this was Gibson's first time doing that process in the NHL, after spending his whole career in Anaheim.
He needs and deserves more time to prove himself in Detroit.
In Rosen's words:
"That's not the solution. Not yet at least. It may eventually come to that, or at least someone else going on waivers to get Cossa up to Detroit from Grand Rapids, where he is performing well in the American Hockey League. [...]
We can't forget that the Red Wings are Gibson's first new team in his NHL career and for a goalie, it can take some time to get adjusted to playing in a different system with all new defensemen. That's why Gibson should not be at the end of his runway.
Even more, the Red Wings acquired him to be a possible No. 1 goalie, sending goalie Petr Mrazek and two draft picks, including a second-round pick in 2027, to the Anaheim Ducks. They're not going to give up on him after a dozen games, especially to elevate a goalie in Cossa who has one game of NHL experience, and that was in relief last season.
Cossa will get his chance, maybe even this season, but not at the expense of Gibson. At least not yet."
