The Detroit Red Wings have an opportunity to bolster their bottom six at zero cost after the Pittsburgh Penguins placed a promising winger on the NHL waiver wire.

However, Steve Yzerman didn't have the opportunity to claim him, as the Calgary Flames, who had priority over the Wings, decided to take him.
Today, the Wings have another chance to add a player for free, as the Pittsburgh Penguins placed a promising forward on the waiver wire.

Penguins Place Philip Tomasino on Waivers

The renowned NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed in a post on X that the Pittsburgh Penguins organization decided to place the 24-year-old winger Philip Tomasino on waivers:
Tomasino was limited to a single point, an assist, in nine games with the Penguins this season.
In 218 NHL games with the Nashville Predators and Penguins, the 24th overall pick in 2019 tallied 34 goals and 61 assists.
The Penguins head coach Dan Muse opened up on Tomasino's recent performances in a recent press conference, which hinted at dissatisfaction from the coaching staff regarding his play:
"For any player, it's finding a way to impact the game. And how that's going to look is going to be different for each player in the lineup."

"Tomasino, he's a guy that the offense is there. He's got a great shot. I think it's about putting himself in position to use that or to set up plays. He's got the playmaking ability, as well. I think getting to the inside [is important for him]. I think he's been at his best when he's holding onto pucks and finding that next play."

"He's shown [he can produce] in this league before. But in the end, it comes down to - for everybody - how do you impact the game? Finding a way to impact the game. Finding a way within what you do, within that identity as a player."

A player like him could benefit from a fresh start. If teams who are higher on the waiver priority list don't claim him, don't be surprised if Steve Yzerman decides to give him a shot.
