Todd McLellan opened up on those issues in his post-game comments:
"There's probably going to be a lot of talk about what we didn't get or didn't find down the stretch, but in my opinion, it's what we gave up. There was too much free, especially early in the game.
I give the guys credit for sticking with it and fighting back. Maybe we did deserve better, but we can't give up goals for free. We did tonight.
It's going to happen sometimes, but it's how you give them up. The freebies, they're killers at the end of the night. If a team really earns it and has done what it needs to do, you have to live with that and move on. But, yeah ...."
Today, these struggles fueled trade rumors.
Trade Speculation Surrounding Red Wings Reaches New Level
The Wings could be turning to the trade market to fill lineup needs on their team. Adding veteran defensemen or forwards would surely help them make a push for the playoffs.
Losing against a team like the Devils, who were decimated by injuries, confirms that the current version of the lineup will struggle to make the playoffs.
It'll be interesting to see if a deal happens with the Canucks soon.
