The Red Wings are expected to be players in the free agent market this summer, and they've been linked to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and have also been suggested as potential destinations for players like Nikolaj Ehlers and Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and others.
But one lesser-known name that they're now being linked to spent plenty of time not only playing with the Maple Leafs but also the Philadelphia Flyers.
Veteran James van Riemsdyk, who was the 2nd overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Flyers, is being rumored to come to Detroit by NHL Trade Rumors, who touts his veteran status and timely scoring.
The Red Wings could consider bringing in a forward like van Riemsdyk for more forward depth. When looking at their roster, he could slot nicely in their bottom six. He would also give them another veteran to help mentor their younger players if signed, which could come in handy for a Red Wings team looking to make the playoffs.
van Riemsdyk spent 2023-24 playing with the divisional foe Boston Bruins, helping them to a Round 1 series win over the Maple Leafs before they were beaten by the Florida Panthers.
This year, he played with the Columbus Blue Jackets; he had 36 points (16G, 20A) in 71 games played. His 16 goals this year were the most he'd scored since netting 24 with the Flyers in 2021-22.
He has 665 points (327G, 338A) in 1,082 games with the Flyers, Maple Leafs, Bruins and Blue Jackets.
