One of the Detroit Red Wings division rivals signed a Stanley Cup champion defenseman to a contract extension.

There's a lot of parity around the league this year, especially in the Eastern Conference.
In the Metropolitan Division, only six points separate the first from the last team, and in the Atlantic, nine.
In the latter, the Red Wings are in the fourth spot, with 30 points after 27 games.
The top team in their division only has four more points, and a new development could help them gain momentum ahead of the rest of the season.

Lightning Announce Contract Extension To Stanley Cup Champion

The Tampa Bay Lightning surprised a lot of people by bouncing back from a terrible start to the season and now have a 16-8-2 record.
Yesterday, the team announced that they signed one of their most important players to a multi-year extension.
Indeed, Ryan McDonagh agreed to sign a three-year extension with an average annual value of $4.1 million.
The 36-year-old defenseman took part in 1025 NHL games in his career, including 364 with the Lightning. He also played for the New York Rangers and Nashville Predators.
In the Lightning franchise history, the veteran ranked second for blocked shots, with 707, and for plus/minus. He notably led the NHL in that category last season with a +43.
He won two Stanley Cups with the Bolts in 2020 and 2021, and was invited to Team USA's orientation camp for the upcoming Olympic Games.
This season, he has six points, including three goals, in 15 games.
