The Windsor Spitfires have taken a significant step to improve their defense by acquiring Tnias Mathurin from the North Bay Battalion.
After conceding the fifth-most goals in modern franchise history last season, the Spitfires recognized the need for a strong, experienced presence on the blue line. Mathurin, a 20-year-old overage defenseman standing at 6'3" and weighing 195 pounds, is expected to fill that void.
Mathurin, a former third-round pick by the Battalion and a fifth-round NHL Draft pick by the Detroit Red Wings, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to Windsor. Despite a shoulder injury that limited his play last season, Mathurin managed an impressive plus-26 rating in 51 regular-season games and a plus-14 in 16 playoff games. His defensive skills and winning pedigree make him an ideal fit for a Spitfires team eager to improve.
In addition to bolstering the team's defense, Mathurin is prepared to mentor younger players and help the Spitfires reach new heights, mirroring the success he experienced with North Bay.
