The Detroit Red Wings plan to give defenseman second chance after injury prone 2024 season

One Red Wings writer believes that the team should bring back veteran defenseman Jeff Petry for another season after injuries hampered him in 2024-25.
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry is at the end of his contract and can become a UFA on July 1.
Having spent the last 2 years playing in Detroit, his hometown team and not far from where his father Dan Petry starred as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, there's been no indication from the Red Wings regarding their interest in another potential year for him in the Winged Wheel.
Anthony Ibanez of Octopus Thrower believes the Red Wings believes the Red Wings should retain him for next season.
I know this may sound like the ramblings of a "Petry stan" (and it may be), but I strongly feel that the team should bring him back for at least one more season. He makes a fantastic bottom pair or 7th defenseman who's still capable of running a powerplay when needed. Not to mention, he's only 19 games away from hitting 1000 games, and it only feels right that he hits that mark with his childhood and hometown team.
Does Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, who acquired Petry in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, agree with that?
Petry does bring veteran leadership to a rebuilding club with plenty of young pieces. But after Petry was hurt in early January and missed the next several weeks of action, the Red Wings got some strong play out of young rookie Albert Johansson.
Johansson carved out a strong role for himself on the Detroit blue line and impressed coach Todd McLellan with his play.
It will be up to Yzerman to decide if he wants to bring back Petry for what would likely be his final season in the NHL.
