The Red Wings have put together their 2nd 7-game winning streak since Todd McLellan took over on December 26, and there's a key essential factor in his mind that's making it possible.
The
Detroit Red Wings are riding high right now having earned their 2nd 7-game winning streak under new coach Todd McLellan since December 29.
They've vaulted themselves right back into the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff chase, and currently occupy one of the pair of Wild Card spots.
As it happens, the other team in a Wild Card spot is their next opponent, the divisional foe Tampa Bay Lightning; they'll play them tomorrow afternoon at Little Caesars Arena (1:00 PM, ABC, ESPN+, 97.1 The Ticket) in what will be the last game before the NHL passes for the 4 Nations Faceoff.
Head coach Todd McLellan explained following today's practice that an essential ingredient of his team's winning ways is the tandem of
Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot, both of whom have played critical roles in Detroit's success.
I think it's essential. Often you have two goalies, and one's maybe not playing as well, so you run the hot one, and you try to get the other one playing again. We're fortunate that both are playing well and contributing to the team success. They play off each other.
They both practice hard. We haven't had to go and rescue a goalie yet, if I'm trying to find a word, to recover and rescue a goalie that maybe hasn't played well and overrun another one. So that makes the dual goaltender luxury even better.
For tomorrow's game, it will be Lyon back in the crease for Detroit; he recently made a season-best 45 saves in the Red Wings' 3-2 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers last week on January 31.
Among Lyon's highlights from the game was an outstretched save on Edmonton's
