Waived forward shimmers regret to the Red Wings organization
The Detroit Red Wings waived forward Jonatan Berggren, and the regret must be shimmering back onto the organization for the poor choice.
On December 15th, 2025, the Detroit Red Wings waived forward Jonatan Berggren, a regular healthy scratch in the lineup.
Afterward, he'd be claimed by the St. Louis Blues, and the 2018 2nd-round pick began anew.
It wouldn't be more than 2 games before Berggren would score his first goal with the Blues, with one point to his name already (1 G).
His point came on Thursday night against the New York Rangers and Igor Shesterkin, demonstrating why the Red Wings viewed him as a potential top-six forward. He'd snipe one on the former Vezina Trophy winner.
His ability to put one past Shesterkin showed that he felt comfortable in his new surroundings as a St. Louis Blues player under Jim Montgomery.
«I just play my game,» Berggren said. «I haven't played a lot of hockey this season, so it's just fun to be out there and be with the boys and play good hockey. It's easy for me to adapt, a really fun group and very skillful. So yeah, they make it easy for me.»
He'd be a key contributor in the downfall of the Rangers that night, 2-1.
The Detroit Red Wings' shame must be reflecting back to the organization with Jonatan Berggren's success in St. Louis
Though Jonatan Berggren had plenty of opportunities in the lineup, you have to wonder what ultimately failed him here in Hockeytown.
We think one factor was his inability to address his defensive weaknesses with the Red Wings.
He played 169 games of hockey as a Red Wings forward and scored no more than 64 points (31-33) here.
In St. Louis, he has already played alongside former Red Wings player Pius Suter and was elevated to play with center Robert Thomas and skilled forward Pavel Buchnevich.
Berggren has shown he has plenty of offensive potential, but they were never truly able to unlock it here, as his rookie season in the league saw him score 28 points (15-13) in 67 games.
He's not been able to find a full-time spot in the NHL despite his best efforts, instead playing the majority of 2023-24 in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
He'd never replicate that production again, and now, with a fresh start in St. Louis, he could turn things around.
In 2024-25, he played a total of 75 games and scored 24 points (12-12). In addition to scooping up Berggren for free, his cap hit is an affordable $1.825 million
