WATCH: Teddy bears shower the ice at Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins game
It was the annual Teddy Bear toss at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, the home of the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.
What a scene it was at Van Andel Arena, the home of the Grand Rapids Griffins. Over 8,000 fans packed the venue for one of the most beloved traditions in sports - the famous teddy bear toss.
The Griffins took on the Milwaukee Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators, the night of the famed tradition that goes toward helping the most vulnerable members of society - sick children.
Per the Griffins official website, the following information is posted for those not familiar with the practice:
Fans are encouraged to bring new, store-tagged teddy bears and stuffed animals to throw onto the ice after the Griffins score their first goal.
Forward Austin Watson converted a pretty cross-ice pass from Nate Danielson and fired a wrist shot into the net, and immediately the teddy bears began showering onto the ice:
Later asked about his affinity for scoring during the beloved night for charity, Watson answered with a smile that he wasn't surprised that he scored for the special festivity.
