The Detroit Red Wings are one of three NHL franchises participating in a new program that could revolutionize hockey gaming.

Hockey has changed a lot in the past years, with organizations using technology to take their game to whole new levels. In Detroit, the team has often promoted esports initiatives, giving access to young fans and aspiring players through tournaments, online events, and community programs that bridge traditional hockey with the digital world.
In a new development, the Red Wings, alongside the New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings, announced that they were participating in a new initiative, in what could be a ground-breaking video game program.
Indeed, the NHL and the NHLPA, associated with the Los Angeles-based esports platform PlayVS, are launching Game On, a pilot designed to inspire fans in esports competitions through team and skill-building games, while promoting inclusion and connection among the community.
Players will also get a chance to engage with NHL teams through that program, which will bring together players between 13 and 21 years old to compete in structured exercises to encourage teamwork, leadership, and other skills required on and off the ice.
Jon Chapman, CEO of PlayVS, released the following statement about the initiative:
"Gaming has the power to bring today's young players together in ways that are both meaningful and lasting. Through this partnership with the NHL/NHLPA's Industry Growth Fund, we're not only creating new opportunities for players to engage with their favorite sport but also helping them develop critical life skills - like leadership, communication, and resilience - through healthy competition."

Last March, 40 high school students and coaches gathered at the Devils Gaming Group Lounge at the Prudential Center to play EA's NHL 25, with appearances from former Devils players, team executives, and the mascot.
Another event will be held between June 13 and 15 to end the season.
PlayVS hopes that these events are the first step toward a global change in North America regarding player development, social cooperation, and fans' relationships with NHL organizations.
