The Detroit Red Wings Yzerplan could crumble if GM Steve Yzerman isn't able to turn the team around during the 2025-2026 season.
While
Steve Yzerman did excellent work building the Tampa Bay Lightning team that'd become a dynasty, he's not infallible.
Since his tenure in
Detroit began, he's not seen the playoffs, counting six years, while the team itself is going on nine in total.
For NHL teams that missed revenue, concessions, and merchandise money missing that could fill the coffers in those extra months. Building a winning team signifies a change in culture, and could bring over stars based on reputation.
But for Yzerman, he's built none of those despite his wunderkind style of managing done in Tampa Bay.
Hiring Head Coach Todd McLellan was a way to snag a small victory near the end of the season, after Lalonde wasn't up to the task.
With $21.3 million in cap space, he will need to fill out the defense and top-six while keeping the rebuild on pace.
However, all suggestions point to the fact that he's unable to do so in Detroit. The best signing he's made lately, it
Patrick Kane.
His trade deadline was pathetic, acquiring only
Craig Smith, and
Petr Mrazek, while shipping Joe Veleno to Chicago.
The acquisition of
Justin Holl leaves us with one question: "Why", and the same could be said for the trade of
Jake Walman.
If GM Steve Yzerman isn't feeling the heat, he should be soon from ownership. After more than half a decade, this rebuild has gone on far too long.
