The Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman are attempting to mend fences with Sergei Federov when they hang his jersey in Little Caesars Arena's rafters in January.

Does it appear that the Detroit Red Wings are making a major shift in relations with superstar Sergei Fedorov? Well, it should.
The team is giving him the honor of a jersey retirement ceremony in January when the team takes on the Carolina Hurricanes at home, in Little Caesars Arena.
This move is contrary to how they've treated him in the past in recent years. Fedorov, a former 74th overall pick, was one of the very first Russian hockey players to be targeted by NHL teams, a move begun by GM Jim Dellevano.

The Defection & Ultimate Downfall Between The Two Parties

The team would utilize Keith Grave and Jim Lite to help the former CSKA star defect from the Soviet Union and begin his career in the NHL. Fedorov would stack trophy on trophy as he won the Hart Trophy, Selke Trophy, and Lester Pearson award during his 120-point, 1993-94 season.
Soon, he and the Red Wings would peak, earning Stanley Cup hardware for the first time as a group in 1996-97, and he, along with the rest of the Russian Five, would solidify that dominance in the NHL.
Struggles would begin, as Fedorov was an RFA in 1997-98 and would hold out for a new deal with Detroit, but would sign a $38 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Mike Illitch and the front office would match, in what would later become the wedge that separated the two parties. The Red Wings would pay him a total of $28 million in bonuses on his new contract, and Fedorov would deliver two more cups (1998 & 2002).
The holdout caused the relationship to fray, and after 2002-03, he'd sign a $40 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks, turning down a luscious $50 million offer from the Red Wings.
Fedorov would become a pariah for the next two decades, until the former MVP and the team would attempt to mend fences, and this could be the start of a fruitful relationship again.
