The Detroit Red Wings organization finally announced that they will retire the number of one of the team's biggest legends: Sergei Fedorov.

It finally happened.
Hockeytown has been waiting a long time for this moment, and now the news is official.
The Red Wings will hold the ceremony on January 12, 2026, during their Centennial season. It'll take place right before a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Here's the Wings' official announcement:

Fedorov Reacts To Jersey Retirement Announcement

Fedorov, now 55, got the call from team owner and CEO Chris Ilitch on August 18. Many fans felt this was overdue. Nicklas Lidström, drafted the same year as Fedorov in 1989, had his No. 5 retired back in 2014. But saving it for the centennial makes this honor stand out even more.
After the announcement, Fedorov shared his thoughts in a team release:
"I'm extremely grateful for this tremendous honor. Thank you to everyone with the Red Wings organization, especially those who helped bring me to Detroit and gave me the chance to play for such a historic franchise. I was fortunate to be part of some unforgettable teams, and above all, I'm proud of the three Stanley Cup championships we won for our amazing fans in Hockeytown.

The memories made along the way - with legendary teammates, coaches, and exceptional ownership - will stay with me forever. Lastly, I want to thank Chris Ilitch for the call yesterday to share the news about retiring my number. It's a moment I'll always cherish. I can't wait to see everyone in January."

Fedorov's No. 91 will become the ninth jersey retired by Detroit.
He'll join Terry Sawchuk, Red Kelly, Niklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and of course Steve Yzerman.
Chris Ilitch also spoke about the honor, saying:
"We are honored to celebrate Sergei Fedorov and raise his #91 to its rightful place hanging in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena, among the all-time greats who have worn the Winged Wheel All of us at the Red Wings look forward to hosting Sergei and his family in January to pay tribute to his remarkable career."

It's a moment long overdue, and in January, Fedorov will finally get the tribute he deserves.
