Bad news strikes multiple ex-Red Wings on NHL opening night
Bad news was announced concerning two former Detroit Red Wings players ahead of the 2025-26 NHL regular season.
Indeed, three games will go down tonight to kick off the season, meaning the final cuts have been announced.
Two former Detroit Red Wings players on PTOs with other organizations have learned their fate ahead of the season.
Former Detroit Red Wings Players Released From PTOs
James Reimer and Robby Fabbri, two former members of the Detroit Red Wings organization, have officially been released from their PTOs, which they signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In Toronto, the team was desperately looking for depth between the pipes, with
Joseph Woll away from the team for personal reasons.
Yesterday, the team decided to claim
Cayden Primeau from the Carolina Hurricanes on waivers and released Reimer from his PTO.
It's hard to predict how the Penguins season will go down, but if massive changes must occur, giving a shot to younger prospects rather than veterans joining on PTOs is the obvious choice.
The two players are now free to sign a contract, but at this point, if it's not in the American Hockey League, don't be surprised if they sign in Europe, Russia, or retire.
Official updates should follow; stay tuned for the latest developments.
