Bad news strikes multiple ex-Red Wings on NHL opening night

By now, all NHL teams have released their official roster for their season opener, with action starting today.

Indeed, three games will go down tonight to kick off the season, meaning the final cuts have been announced.

Two former Detroit Red Wings players on PTOs with other organizations have learned their fate ahead of the season.

James Reimer and Robby Fabbri, two former members of the Detroit Red Wings organization, have officially been released from their PTOs, which they signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In Toronto, the team was desperately looking for depth between the pipes, with Joseph Woll away from the team for personal reasons.

The Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving decided to sign Reimer to a PTO as a low-risk option, but the veteran goalie was sent on the ice for only half of a game during the preseason, which they lost 6-5 in overtime.

Yesterday, the team decided to claim Cayden Primeau from the Carolina Hurricanes on waivers and released Reimer from his PTO.

As for Fabbri, he couldn't convince the Pittsburgh Penguins to give him a contract during camp and was also released.

It's hard to predict how the Penguins season will go down, but if massive changes must occur, giving a shot to younger prospects rather than veterans joining on PTOs is the obvious choice.

The two players are now free to sign a contract, but at this point, if it's not in the American Hockey League, don't be surprised if they sign in Europe, Russia, or retire.
