The Detroit Red Wings, an original six team, have witnessed every NHL expansion and developed numerous rivals throughout history.

Classic rivalries include those with the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Colorado Avalanche. However, modern NHL rivalries have diminished. Despite this, the Red Wings have fostered new rivalries within their division.

Florida Panthers: The Panthers, now Stanley Cup champions, have historically troubled the Red Wings. Despite being a mid-tier team, the Panthers often bested Detroit, winning 14 of the last 17 games before the 2023-24 season. Their matches are intense and physical, making each game entertaining.

Boston Bruins: Known for their physical play and "rat" behavior, led by Brad Marchand, the Bruins are perennial contenders. The Red Wings, splitting their series 2-2 last season, have a .511pts% historically against the Bruins. As Detroit improves, this Original Six rivalry intensifies.

Ottawa Senators: Unlike traditional rivalries, this one sparked on social media. After a rough back-to-back series in the 2022-23 season, tensions escalated, culminating in a serious injury to Dylan Larkin in December 2023. Offensive comments from Senators fans worsened the feud, making this rivalry both on and off the ice significant.
