Mark Leach's experience in amateur scouting is a valuable asset for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who hired him as director of amateur scouting.

Starting with the Detroit Red Wings in 1996, he supported the selections of stars like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
He also pushed for drafting Jimmy Howard, Johan Franzen, and Justin Abdelkader. Moving to the Dallas Stars in 2013, Leach was key in selecting Miro Heiskanen, Jason Robertson, and Jake Oettinger, along with other notable picks like Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven, and Mavrik Bourque.
Now, as the Maple Leafs' director of amateur scouting, Leach's keen eye for talent is expected to revitalize their draft strategy. The Leafs have praised recent picks like Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten, but only two of their 38 selections since 2019 have played 15 or more NHL games. Leach's expertise will improve Toronto's draft success and build a stronger prospect pool.
