The Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings completed a historic trade on this day in history in August, as they sent defenseman Bill Quackenbush and Pete Horeck to the Boston Bruins.

The Detroit Red Wings completed a massive player swap involving five total players and two of their own 76 years ago today.
Bill Quackenbush and Pete Horeck were two members of the Detroit Red Wings who were traded to the Boston Bruins.
Quackenbush was a Lady Byng Trophy winner in 1949, a three-time NHL First Team All-Star (1948, 1949, and 1951), and a later Hockey Hall of Fame inductee (1976). The undrafted defenseman began his career in the NHL with the Red Wings in 1944-45 and was known as an offensive defenseman.
While Pete Horeck, nicknamed "Pistol" Pete, was a left-winger who originally began his career in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks and was the 2nd piece the Red Wings moved in the trade. He was another goal scorer the Red Wings would give up in order to secure depth pieces like Pete Babando, Lloyd Durham, Clare Martin, and Jimmy "Shakey" Peters Sr.
It was obvious that Horeck was someone the Red Wings were trying to get rid of as part of the package deal, as Horeck's production would decline in Boston, leading to him returning to Ontario to play with the NOHA's Sudbury Wolves.

The Red Wings Received A Haul In Completed Trade With The Bruins

It's arguable that the return on the trade was as good as the pieces they gave up, Pete Babando, would only play 56 games for the Red Wings during the 1949-50 season, scoring 12 points (6-6).
While Lloyd Durham wouldn't make so much as a byline in Red Wings history.
The main piece in this trade, which helped the Red Wings secure a Stanley Cup in 1950, was Clare Martin.
He'd later return to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1951, soon after being a hired gun in Detroit.
Jimmy Peters Sr., aka "Shakey," would only suit up for the Red Wings for two seasons in 1949-50 and 1950-51.
He'd score a total of 68 points (31-37) and would be another key piece in the Red Wings' Stanley Cup run in 1950.
While trades like this seem inconsequential, they were a vital part of the Red Wings' Stanley Cup win soon after.
