NHL Insiders Harman Dayal and Corey Pronman have listed forward Jonatan Berggren of the Detroit Red Wings as a candidate to be cut from the roster.

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, the Red Wings will have to make some tough decisions. For a team that's looking to break a nine-year playoff spell.
The team brought back former AHL All-Star and 33rd overall pick to the lineup, Jonatan Berggren. They'd sign him to a one-year $1.28 million, prove-it deal.
For the depth forward, his future is uncertain as no roster spot is guaranteed.
NHL Insider Corey Pronman and Harman Dayal of The Athletic believe that Berggren will be the team's waiver candidate.
«As Detroit's recent first-round picks at forward continue to progress, Berggren could get squeezed out,» the article read. «He's an excellent skater with a high skill level. But he's not dynamic enough offensively as a small winger who isn't hard to play against to lock down a spot long-term. At some point, it feels like his time in Detroit will come to an end when someone like Nate Danielson or Michael Brandsegg-Nygaard makes the team. That time could come as soon as this fall.»

Though it'd be surprising if they waive Berggren, as he is still valuable enough to get a mid-round pick in return for the 24 (12-12) point forward.

Jonatan Berggren Will Have To Fight to Stay in the NHL

Jonatan Berggren is a former AHL All-Star who's had difficulty making the transition to the NHL. Despite being given an opportunity in the top six, he's failed to make an impact alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.
But he believes he'll be able to build off the 75-game stretch played last year.
He'll have to show the Red Wings during training camp that he is exactly who he says he is.
«Especially last summer, I feel like that was really good and then at Training Camp, everything felt good,» Berggren said. «I took another step last year. But I feel like I'm starting at a higher level this year maybe than where I was two years ago. I want to do the same thing this summer because I feel like that's going to give me a good result this year.»

The former 2nd-round pick has been seen on the same line as JT Compher and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. While Todd McLellan wants to see how Brandsegg-Nygard will do on the same line as Compher and Berggren, we need to examine Berggren's path after training camp.
It could mean back to the AHL or a waiver claim.
