TheDetroit Red Wings' tradition of their rookies competing in the Traverse City Tournament has come to an end, as Dan Cleary dropped news that top prospect Nate Danielson and company will play in Dallas instead.
In an unexpected change from the
Detroit Red Wings, the organization has killed a tradition.
The tradition of keeping the prospects local in the
Traverse City prospect tournament, at the Centre ICE Arena. This has been an ongoing tournament that has been held for the past two decades.
Unwittingly, perhaps even unknowingly, Detroit Red Wings director of player development Dan Cleary was letting the cat out of the bag during the club's development camp last week.
Answering a question about Detroit prospect Nate Danielson, Cleary was dropping this little nugget of information.
«When we go to Dallas for prospects tournament . . .» Cleary said.
Traverse City is a spectacle Red Wings fans are familiar with, and have had the privilege of seeing players like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk put on a winged wheel for the first time. Now.. dead!
Now, in 2024-25, the team will take the show on the road. For the first time since 1998, the Detroit Red Wings and their prospects will head out of town and will take on the Dallas Stars' prospects in Frisco, Texas.
Sorry about any plans you had.
It seems a natural progression, ironically, as only the Stars' rookies made the trip to Traverse City to partake in the tournament.
Now, the Red Wings' premier rookie tournament may end up being held every other year, as they switch venues between Texas and Michigan.
This was once a premier rookie tournament before the start of the NHL season, and it once included upwards of eight NHL teams. It dwindled to four, and then to two.
Now, we lament the shelving of what once was a spot we got a spot to see the Red Wings' newest players play in a setting that's accessible, like the Centre Ice Arena.
The next tournament could take place in 2026.
