Ex-Red Wings forward Joe Veleno, who was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in March and later traded to and bought out by the Seattle Kraken, could be on the radar of Detroit's divisional foe Montreal Canadiens.
Things didn't work out as planned for Joe Veleno with the Red Wings, who decided to part ways with him at the Trade Deadline.
The former
1st round pick of Detroit, acquired with the 1st round pick they acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018 for Tomas Tatar, was sent to the Chicago Blackhawks for
Petr Mrazek.
Mrazek has since been traded by the Red Wings to the Anaheim Ducks for
John Gibson.
Veleno routinely went long stretches of time without a single point, leading Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to decide the time had come to move on. But the Blackhawks also decided to move on from Veleno shortly after their year ended, trading him to the Seattle Kraken for
Andre Burakovsky.
The Kraken then bought out the final year of his contract, meaning that he's now a UFA and free to sign with any team. There is now a chance that he could return to the Atlantic Division.
Per a new report, the Montreal Canadiens are reportedly interested in signing Veleno, who is from Quebec.
Rumors are swirling that Joe Veleno will be signed by Montreal, which would be great news for the Canadiens. He could have a full line-up for the start of the season and let the youngsters improve in Laval instead of playing 7 minutes on the 4th line.
Veleno has played in 306 career NHL games with the Red Wings and Blackhawks, and has 81 points (38G, 43A).
